GPSR readiness

What is the General Product Safety Regulation?

GPSR strengthens product-safety expectations for goods sold in the EU. For ecommerce, that often shows up as information that must be visible on product pages - not buried in PDFs or backend-only fields.

The General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) is the EU framework that replaced the old General Product Safety Directive for many non-food consumer products. For online stores, the practical impact is often about what shoppers and market surveillance can see on the product listing itself.

Not legal adviceThis page is a plain-language overview for ecommerce teams. Your obligations depend on product type, role in the supply chain, and market. Always validate requirements with qualified advisors.

Why product pages matter

Regulators and customers increasingly expect product-safety information to be findable where the product is sold. That usually means your PDP (product detail page) and related catalog fields - not a separate compliance folder your team cannot easily audit at scale.

CatalogProof looks for visible listing signals on rendered product pages: text in the HTML, structured data where present, and page content a shopper would see in the browser.

Signals CatalogProof looks for

These are heuristic checks - potential missing signals that need review, not automatic violations:

  • Manufacturer information

Name and contact details associated with the product.

  • EU responsible person

Where required, details for the economic operator responsible in the EU.

  • Importer

When the manufacturer is outside the EU, importer details may need to be visible.

  • Product identifier

SKU, GTIN, EAN, or similar traceability references on the listing.

  • Safety warnings & instructions

Hazard notices, usage warnings, or safety information surfaced on the page.

  • Visible, not buried

Signals must be on the listing itself - not in PDFs or backend-only fields.

Template problems vs one-off pages

A single missing manufacturer line might be a content mistake. The same gap on 80% of sampled product pages usually points to a missing metafield, theme block, or catalog export mapping. CatalogProof groups findings by pattern so you can fix the root cause once.

GPSR is not the same as accessibility (EAA)

Product-safety listing signals are separate from accessibility requirements under the European Accessibility Act (EAA). Image alt text, form labels, and contrast issues are accessibility / EAA readiness checks - CatalogProof runs both on the same product pages but reports them in separate categories.

How CatalogProof helps

  1. Sample product pages from your public storefront.
  2. Scan rendered HTML for GPSR-related listing signals.
  3. Highlight recurring patterns, affected URLs, and prioritized fix buckets in an executive report.
  4. Optionally unlock a full crawl with CSV export for agency or developer handoff.
